NEENER

28 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Jon Caramanica has a gig at the NY Times Music Review blog. He was in attendence at Jason's show last night in NYC at Joe's Pub and wrote up his review of the night here.

Talking about Jason's EP as it compares to other Idol releases, he writes:

But no one rushed Mr. Castro to pin down his style, and he certainly didn’t rush himself.

He’s got it down cold now, though: 1960s pop with bright guitars, slashed through with a contrarian streak. It’s as if he were still stuck in one of the genre-themed weeks on “Idol,” but the most apt one. Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz should be nervous (to say nothing of Wednesday night’s actual headliner, Matt Hires, who received a fraction of the adulation bestowed on Mr. Castro).

(Sorry Matt - Jon doesn't know that we all adore you too.)

Jon seemed to love each performance more than the last - excluding Crazy. What's more, Jon recognizes that Jason is unique and that he now owns his own style with conviction and comfort. As he said in his review of Jason's Hallelujah, "He planted a flag — each note was his own."

RFO, Jon. It's nice to see the professional critics catching up.

Jason at Haverford High School

27 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Jason performed Let's Just Fall in Love Again at Haverford High School.

And something to look forward to:

Castro helped make dreams come true for aspiring Haverford High musician Nick Quartapella by recording a duet with him in the high school’s new TV studio before heading to a gig at World Cafe Live.

The video of “I’m Yours,” a song written by Jason Mraz, will be aired on H-Vision and the district Web site.

“It was awesome. I’m still shaking,” said Quartapella, 17, who has his own band, The Management.

“I thought it would be really cool to play with a famous musician. His story inspires me a lot.”

Jason, Matt and Caitlin made a stop between gigs to record The Corner Lounge at 106.1 WCNR in Charlottesville today. They each performed 3 songs, but due to lack of storage on my flip, I only captured 2 of Caitlin's songs and 1 of Matt's. I have all of Jason's here. The podcast of these performances will be up on The Corner sometime this week. Brad is planning to make a special on air radio show of this event, possibly Wednesday. Thank you SO much Brad Savage, radio announcer extraordinaire!

Castrocopia awards the coveted Right Fucking On Award to our own Camicopian - Bits!

22 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
There is right way and a wrong way to promote an artist that you are no longer objective about. When you are clearly drinking the koolaid as they say, you can often succomb to what's known as "cognitive dissonance" wherein you are so overly invested in an artist that you are no longer capable of recognizing when they stop farting butterflies. When you push an artist repeatedly at people who are leery of the koolaid in the first place, it's very easy to put them off forever, or just make them dig their heels in and really really really want to dislike everything about your super annoying, never-ending obsession. And that's just your mom! When you start approaching people who are pre-leery due to their profession, people whose sole purpose is to chew up and spit out your dreams of super stardom for your favorite artist.... well, then you're talking about a game of cat and mouse that will probably end up pretty ugly.

But our friend Bits was undaunted as she started her campaign to woo Miami Herald's Howard Cohen to Jason's side. Howard, for his part, was having none of it. This was a critical moment where Bits might have chosen to a) walk away, head down and dejected or b) write an indignant email about Howard's lack of intelligence or c) humbly ask him to just give it a shot.... and ask him to listen to the pre-purchased EP that she was including in her email. Bits wisely chose the third course. And the results were magnificent (queue fireworks).

Howard writes in his Miami Herald review:

Jason's Number One Fan, is gonna love this -- I've come around a bit on the good-natured singer-songwriter.

(That's Bits.)

Now bear in mind, this guy does not want to be a fan of Jason's so the review is not something you'd see written by, say, Arty. But for a hostile reviewer, it's pretty cool that he concedes the EP works.

Amiable tunes like the EP highlight If I Were You ("If I were you/I would fall for me") and the mellow pop vibe of the title track ride a wave of Jason's considerable charm and serviceable voice.

And the following is like a premonition:

If Atlantic promotes this properly and works the right single [...] Jason could wind up converting a few more people to his camp. I'm not a fan yet, [Bits], but you may have been on to something all along.

Thank you, Bits. You did it!

Music Guru Friday: Stephen Kanicka

22 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Jason has put together a band to help him realize his sound a little more fully. You may have become familiar with them online or maybe you were fortunate enough to see them perform at the Texas State Fair. Jason's new lead guitarist will be Stephen Kanicka and we will be getting to know him very soon, as he's joining Jason throughout the Matt Hires tour. But today, we get a little insight into his musical mind, since he was kind enough to be our

Lead Guitar Guru

Some girls are all about the drummers, some girls are all about the front man, but me, I'm all about the boys with guitars. The sound of an acoustic guitar is, for me, one of the loveliest sounds on earth. And don't get me started on the cathartic nature of a great crunchy electric guitar riff. Not that I have anything against drummers. With or without dreads.

Like many guitarists, Stephen remains an enigma. We don't even know how he feels about Nutella yet. But these are mysteries that will surely be resolved through exposure to our nosy busybody curious Castrocopians.

I *can* share with you this nifty video I found of him playing Living On a Prayer with Brandon Heath:

After getting this amazing list of music, I'm all the more interested in getting to know Mr. Kanicka. I heart a boy who hearts Patty Griffin. And including the Ludlows makes me want to be his bosom friend [/Anne of Green Gables - get your minds out of the gutter]. Little does he know, if he would have gone with The Battle of Stirling from Braveheart instead, he would have made a bosom friend of McLovin. And not the Anne Cuthbert variety either. Know what I mean? Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more, say no more...

Thank you, Stephen! We really appreciate your contribution to Music Guru Friday! You're welcome to kick us a list anytime.

1. Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees
When I listen to this song life makes sense. Radiohead has had an enormous influence on my playing, particularly because of Jonny Greenwood. I find their music incredibly inspiring on a number of levels.

2. David Gray - This Years Love
I stole White Ladder from my dad when I was a kid and it's been one of my favorite records ever since.

3. The Roots - I Don't Care
I have a thing for good East Coast hip hop, especially from the early to mid 90's. They had the coolest beats and wordplay.

4. Alicia Keys (ft. John Mayer) - Lesson Learned
I love everything about this song.

5. Phoenix - Lisztomania
Got to see this French band play at Austin City Limits last year. Some of the best pop I've heard in a while. Great performers.

6. Greg Laswell - Off I Go
This guy's voice is haunting and his tunes seem to trap me. I really like the way his songs were produced and mixed. If I ever record my own music this is the vibe I would want to go for.

7. Patty Griffin - Heavenly Day
Oh Patty. You get me every time.

8. Arcade Fire - Wake Up
These alt rock heavy weights won be over instantly. This song was featured on the film Where the Wild Things Are, which was one of my favorite childhood books. In my humble opinion, they couldn't have picked a better theme song.

9. Bob Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone
It amazes me how much of an affect this song had on music and pop culture. It changed everything.

10. London Symphony Orchestra - The Ludlows
I grew up listening to, and playing classical music. This song was featured in Legends of the Fall and has been putting me to sleep lately.

We Got Mail

18 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
From Amber:

Dear Friends,

Because of the urgency of delivering as much food as possible to earthquake victims, I have been working fervently this week to raise funds so that we can quickly accomplish our goals of being first responders in disaster situations. We were able to provide food for 500 people and 1500 bags of water along with medical care to critically injured patients on Sunday. Our Haitian staff and Chad are able to go directly in to needy areas while the military are planning their approach. We are thankful for the privilege of caring for these people and they have expressed gratitude and a spirit of sharing with one another.

GLOW has an offer of a $10,000 matching gift made available for one week. Please visit the website to donate or send a contribution directly, to :

GLOW's Phil Snyder on I Survived

17 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
UPDATE: Phil's episode appears to have been post-poned without warning. In any case, they are airing a different episode tonight. We will post updated information about the new scheduled date and time as we discover it.

Those of you who have been here a while know all about our adopted charity, GLOW. Phil and Amber Snyder are the heart and soul of this charity, not only raising money and awareness but also donating their own time and energy to the cause of helping the children of Haiti - the forgotten ones. It is no stretch of the truth to say that Phil actually puts himself in harm's way to help take others out of it.

We all learned over the course of knowing the Snyders that Phil had once been kidnapped while helping to bring a child back to the United States for much needed surgery. Now we will get to hear the story in Phil's own words on the Biography channel's I Survived tonight at 9 pm EST. (I noticed that the guide on Directv is not showing this episode any longer. It's possible it was bumped due to current circumstances in Haiti. The Biography.com site still shows Phil's episode for tonight.)

Phil challenged us to become the sponsor for the school in LaKoline. In order to do this, we need to be able to pledge support of $900. Thanks to all the Castrocopians who have contributed. Even with small donations of $5-$10, it has added up to a total of $320 per month so far. If you have $5 a month you could spare, that's $5 more than they have now. Just think, it would only take 30 pledges of $20 and Castrocopia alone could keep that school afloat. Thanks to everyone who has not forgotten our kids. (You can email me at lizlemon@castrocopia.com to pledge or get more info.)

If you've missed out on why we support GLOW, who they are and what we've done so far, click here for all the blog articles about them. Or you can join in the discussion on the forum.

Reminder: A generous donor has offered a matching gift offered for $1000 to Haiti Relief. All we need to do is encourage people to donate to GLOW and mark their donations Matching Gift A. They can use clickandpledge through our website, or send a contribution and write Matching Gift A in the comments or on the memo line!

A Nice Little Blog FTW

17 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Like many of you, I get a lot of google alerts. Whenever I get a link to a blog instead of a credible news source, I try to check out the source and decipher first off, if it's just one of you guys pimping your favorite artist and second, if there's anything of substance in the content of the blog worth mention. For instance, if I see that Castrocopia is the source of the news alert, I don't come running back here to post a blog about it (although not because the content isn't spectacular.)

So today I got a blurb about a CD review on a blogspot called this-is-modern.net. I wasn't familiar with this gem of a blog, but I am now. Founded by Tony Gisondi in 2000, this blog is designed to promote his favorite bands to the "fullest extent".

The mission of the site is simple: to help music fans of all types find out about the new and exciting music that is out there, that they may not have otherwise heard about. The site promotes both well known and underground, independent, and unsigned artists. By connecting the site's visitors to this wide array of artists, it allows them to make their own choices and assumptions based on the information set forth before them. You will never find a negative review on the site, nor will an artist be listed here if they hadn't sparked the interest of the site's creator.

I like this guy. A lot.

From what I can gather, he writes about 1 review per day, from arists stemming from John Butler Trio to Vampire Weekend. There are artists you probably know (Matt Hires, Sia, Brandi Carlile) and artists you may not be familiar with (The Disco Biscuits). So he's proven to me, he's a legitimate credible eclectic music freak.

It was with great pleasure that I read his review of Jason's EP.

His mellow voice is going to take the world by storm just as Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz have done.

Thanks Tony! You're welcome at Castrocopia!

Pop Sugar Rush - Greatest American Idol Performances

13 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Making a top 10 list of the most memorable performances of the past 8 seasons would be a daunting and impossible task, and one that is most likely inevitable. Pop Sugar Rush compiled their favorites, and while I could name a string of performances I might have included instead of some of their picks, I can't argue that these are all great performances. We can all agree with their number 4 pick though... Nice walk down Idol memory lane.

Haiti

13 January, 2010 Posted by: McLovin
If you've spent any time with us at all over the past couple years you know that the people of Haiti are near and dear to our hearts; we're particularly enamoured with the group of Haitian sweethearts pictured here.

If you've spent any time over the last day near a TV or the internet you know about the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti yesterday. The poorest country in the Western Hemisphere isn't exactly known for the integrity of its buildings and infrastructure -- having seen pictures of the collapsed capitol building, I can only imagine the devastating effects the quake had on Haiti's hillside slums.

If you've the means and the inclination to help ease some of the misery this has caused, every little bit will make a difference. CNN has compiled a list of vetted organizations that are mobilized to get down there and start caring for these people here; to hep our adopted charity, GLOW Ministries, donations can be made here. Please add the note "earthquake" to earmark funds to help them through the additional burden caused by the quake.

Phone lines going into the country are either unavailable or overburdened, and we're still waiting to hear the fate of our little school in LaKoline. Prayers, mojo, finger-crossing and/or other positive energies sanctioned by your personal belief system that could be directed at Lakoline, GLOW, those who are on their way to help, and Haiti herself are greatly appreciated.

The Love Uncompromised: A Castrocopian Review

13 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Where does one begin? We all are music 'freaks' and take our passion very seriously. Of course I have been a Jason booster , or whatever ya want to call it, since day 1. I tend to be very protective and overbearing when it comes to my music choices, all castrocopians are . I am speechless(almost, lol), proud , estactic, vindicated, but the most appropriate feeling is "humbled". The journey from his church singing to this release is just the beginning, imagine his talent 'aged' and think of what is to come. As we have all said , Jason Castro is the real deal!! I promise this is the last time I will utter these words..."WE WERE SO FUCKING RIGHT AND THE AI FUCKWADS WERE SOOOOOOOO FUCKING WRONG"

Lemon Non-Shuffle: The EP!

12 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
I wasn't going to bother with music today. I mean - who am I fooling? Nobody's gonna listen to this list today. But then a chance question in the forum about the history of EPs and their success got me thinking... And this list was born. The only theme here are bands that started out their careers with a debut EP. There are many, many more than these obviously. Some more notable than others - the Rolling Stones put out several EPs with songs that weren't even their own as they tried to figure out the US market. Jason's in pretty good company...

And so as not to interrupt chart watch, it's after the jump!

Phil Snyder on I Survived

11 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Those of you who have been here a while know all about our adopted charity, GLOW. Phil and Amber Snyder are the heart and soul of this charity, not only raising money and awareness but also donating their own time and energy to the cause of helping the children of Haiti - the forgotten ones. It is no stretch of the truth to say that Phil actually puts himself in harm's way to help take others out of it.

We all learned over the course of knowing the Snyders that Phil had once been kidnapped while helping to bring a child back to the United States for much needed surgery. Now we will get to hear the story in Phil's own words on the Biography channel's I Survived this Sunday, January 17 at 9 pm EST.

Music Guru Friday: Brad Savage

08 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Farewell Guest Shuffle
Those of you who read here regularly know that on Fridays, when we can, we try to post playlists graciously contributed by musicians, writers, posters or other non-McLemon entities. Up til now, we've requested whatever 5 songs randomly came up when their IPod was set to shuffle. This approach yields a certain insight into a person's music collection, but it can be like reaching into the Whitman's Sampler and pulling out strawberry nougat, which can be ok, but disappointing when you would have preferred that one filled with chocolate ganache. (I hate when someone turns the damn lid around.) What I'm getting at is that after doing this for over a year now, we've grown a little bit bored with the format, a lot more curious about the people we're hearing from and utterly shameless in our obsequiousness. Here we have people who live and breathe music, why not let THEM drive.

Welcome to Music Guru Fridays
So in the spirit of a shiny new decade, we hope you'll enjoy our newly retooled feature: Music Guru Friday. It's only a minor change - we'll still try to bring you the most relevant and interesting people we can pester into submission. But instead of getting a random selection, we hope to get a more meaningful collection ... and that most elusive feature of all: COMMENTARY. We're hoping this will make our Friday playlists all the more compelling. And always remember, YOUR comments are welcome about all blog music on our forum - who knows, these contributors might be reading...

I thought it would be fitting for our VERY first music guru to be someone who creates music playlists on a daily basis and GETS PAID to do it. And so without further ado, check out ...

Brad Savage: Radio Station Guru

If you read 1/3 of what I yammer on about, you've no doubt heard by now about the wonderfully music-aware radio station I listen to in Charlottesville. And if you know about that, it follows you know that Brad Savage is a music programmer there and that I introduced him to Jason's music this past Fall. Brad interviews all manner of musicians passing through Charlottesville when they come into the station's lounge to record a set (and he GETS PAID to do it). The two of us are wildly hopeful that Jason will be among the list of veteran lounge performers to grace his station, sooner than later. Until then, you can listen to Brad at 106.1 The Corner in the morning or you can listen to past Corner Lounge interviews/performances in their archive. There's even an interview with Serena Ryder from this past September.

So if you've ever wondered what a DJ listens to when nobody's looking ... the answer's after the jump. Thanks for the list Brad! (Don't forget to pick up Jason's EP next Tuesday - you're gonna love it!)

The McLovin Non-Shuffle

07 January, 2010 Posted by: McLovin
It's still Tuesday somewhere, isn't it? No?

I'm calling this one The Children's Hour: Five Songs I'm playing Because I Wanted To.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Aeroplane [Explicit]
Don't let that [Explicit] tag give you pause to stop and worry about the kiddies; I have it on good authority* that Anthony Kiedis used the international "Earmuffs!" signal immediately before each and every F-bomb.

*made up fact

Cat Power - Good Woman
Sometimes it's the simplest songs that say the most.

Karen O and The Kids - All is Love
Grammy-nominated for Best Song from a Motion Picture (Where the Wild Things Are), this one slid into the fifth nom spot after Miley Cyrus's "The Climb" was withdrawn from contention when someone realized it wasn't originally written for the Hannah Montana movie. To which I say, "A Miley Cyrus song made it in over a Karen O song in the first place? Are you fucking kidding me?"

Yeasayer - 2080
I wonder if this is one of the Yeasayer songs that Cantiello thought was too hippy-dippy for his taste. I also wonder if - somewhere out there - there's a polar opposite of this band named Boosayer.

Dean Man's Bone's - My Body's a Zombie for You
Ryan Gosling a) is talented b) is fearless c) used his talent to scare the shit out of me in "The Believer" or d) all of the above. The correct answer, of course, is e) Why could I not have been Rachel McAdams during filming of "The Notebook"?

Dead Man's Bones is a project Ryan did with his friend, Zach Shields, and the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Children's Choir for what was going to be a staged musical but ended up as a collection of songs instead (all of which can be heard in their entirety here. Sort them by "Newest" to get them in the order in which they were intended to be heard.) They put some crazy parameters on themselves for the project; from allmusic.com:

They played instruments they'd never touched before making the album, and brought in the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Children's Choir to add young voices to their virtually untrained ones. They also set rules for themselves while recording: no electric guitars or click tracks were allowed, and they could only do three takes for any given part.

See? Fearless. Which doesn't mean that E isn't still the correct answer.

Bonus video of Ryan and Zach with the Children's Choir:

Scared of zombies? Then don't illegally download music or the zombies will eat your brains. And while it's true that Jesus made zombies, that doesn't mean that He won't let them have a brain munch on your skull if you're not careful. Consider yourself warned.

Not for Nothing: Atlantic Records ranks as the #1 Record Label of '09

06 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Repeating its success from 2008, Atlantic reported it was ranked #1 in the music industry last year "with the biggest U.S. total album market share of 2009."

Jason Castro fan and Atlantic Chairman/CEO Craig Kallman said:
What is most significant is that we have achieved this with a smaller roster and fewer releases, as we have shifted our mission from being a traditional record company to an A&R-driven music content company where focused, deep, and long-term artist development is king. I'd like to thank our brilliant artists and passionate staff for coming together to realize the vision of the new Atlantic in 2009 and beyond.[...] We live for our artists, and it is our belief in them that fuels our passion and our determination.

Did someone say "Neener"?

Hurry up and get going 2010! You're taking too long.

Dakota Unearths Rare Never-Before-Seen Jason Castro Footage

Remember last year when Jason first visited Atlantic Records and performed in their lobby? And remember how we later got to see video of him performing Alma, Corazon y Vida as an anniversary present to his parents on the old JCM? Right now on Atlantic's Studio 1290 you can view, rate and comment this video as well as a performance of Love Uncompromised and Hallelujah.

Thanks Dakota - you're the hero of the day!

EW's 28 Top Idol Tunes

05 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Michael Slezak, veteran Idol junkie, has compiled a list of his Top 28 Idol Tunes from Idol Grads. Not sure why they stopped at 28 tunes, but no matter as Jason's single falls solidly in the first 10 pics, settling in at number 6.

The jaunty whistles and effervescent handclaps that kick off the laid-back troubador's debut single only begin to hint at the copious charms that lie ahead. Even the most cynical heart will melt as Jason imagines himself and a long-time sweetheart pretending to be strangers just for the sheer joy of reliving their early courtship.

Ah yes, Castrocopious charms. Thanks Michael!

And thanks to Dakota for the find.

Jason's Tour = Love

04 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
There's a nice write up about the upcoming tour with Matt Hires and Caitlin Crosby, entitled "Jason Castro and Co Spread the Love Nationwide" here. It includes some information about all three of the musicians touring together for the next couple of months, but focusses mainly on Jason. Nothing new for avid followers of Jason, but still, it's nice to see the news engine revving up.

What a great day for you! Today is not only palindrome day: 01022010. It's also the day that you were picked by THE Jim Cantiello, aka @jambajim as the "stand out" idol track of '09.

The jaunty jangle of Jason Castro's "Let's Just Fall In Love Again" is a sunny ode to keeping a long-term relationship fresh. The playful, honest lyrics coupled with an instantly hummable melody makes Jason's ditty one of the most charming, original and exciting debut singles of any "Idol" contestant.

Thanks a hell of a lot, Jim, for making that into a jpeg so I'd have to transcribe it. Non-sarcastic thanks for appreciating Jason without us having to send you care packages or jammies. I'm thinking you should be writing for some kind of music network. Boy, were *you* taken in by nomenclature....
