Jason at Haverford High School

27 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Jason performed Let's Just Fall in Love Again at Haverford High School.

And something to look forward to:

Castro helped make dreams come true for aspiring Haverford High musician Nick Quartapella by recording a duet with him in the high schools new TV studio before heading to a gig at World Cafe Live.

The video of Im Yours, a song written by Jason Mraz, will be aired on H-Vision and the district Web site.

It was awesome. Im still shaking, said Quartapella, 17, who has his own band, The Management.

I thought it would be really cool to play with a famous musician. His story inspires me a lot.

Jason, Matt and Caitlin at WCNR The Corner in Charlottesville

24 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Jason, Matt and Caitlin made a stop between gigs to record The Corner Lounge at 106.1 WCNR in Charlottesville today. They each performed 3 songs, but due to lack of storage on my flip, I only captured 2 of Caitlin's songs and 1 of Matt's. I have all of Jason's here. The podcast of these performances will be up on The Corner sometime this week. Brad is planning to make a special on air radio show of this event, possibly Wednesday. Thank you SO much Brad Savage, radio announcer extraordinaire!

Castrocopia awards the coveted Right Fucking On Award to our own Camicopian - Bits!

22 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
There is right way and a wrong way to promote an artist that you are no longer objective about. When you are clearly drinking the koolaid as they say, you can often succomb to what's known as "cognitive dissonance" wherein you are so overly invested in an artist that you are no longer capable of recognizing when they stop farting butterflies. When you push an artist repeatedly at people who are leery of the koolaid in the first place, it's very easy to put them off forever, or just make them dig their heels in and really really really want to dislike everything about your super annoying, never-ending obsession. And that's just your mom! When you start approaching people who are pre-leery due to their profession, people whose sole purpose is to chew up and spit out your dreams of super stardom for your favorite artist.... well, then you're talking about a game of cat and mouse that will probably end up pretty ugly.

But our friend Bits was undaunted as she started her campaign to woo Miami Herald's Howard Cohen to Jason's side. Howard, for his part, was having none of it. This was a critical moment where Bits might have chosen to a) walk away, head down and dejected or b) write an indignant email about Howard's lack of intelligence or c) humbly ask him to just give it a shot.... and ask him to listen to the pre-purchased EP that she was including in her email. Bits wisely chose the third course. And the results were magnificent (queue fireworks).

Howard writes in his Miami Herald review:

Jason's Number One Fan, is gonna love this -- I've come around a bit on the good-natured singer-songwriter.

(That's Bits.)

Now bear in mind, this guy does not want to be a fan of Jason's so the review is not something you'd see written by, say, Arty. But for a hostile reviewer, it's pretty cool that he concedes the EP works.

Amiable tunes like the EP highlight If I Were You ("If I were you/I would fall for me") and the mellow pop vibe of the title track ride a wave of Jason's considerable charm and serviceable voice.

And the following is like a premonition:

If Atlantic promotes this properly and works the right single [...] Jason could wind up converting a few more people to his camp. I'm not a fan yet, [Bits], but you may have been on to something all along.

Thank you, Bits. You did it!

Essay Contest to See Jason Live

On Sunday, January 24, Jason Castro and Matt Hires will each perform a set for the Corner Lounge on 106.1 The Corner in Charlottesville, Virginia. You can win an invitation to this very small show by emailing a brief essay Brad Savage at telling him why you'd like to attend.

Lounge sessions are often played over the air at various times, and you can listen to 106.1 The Corner Streaming Online. And archives from former Corner Lounge performances can be found here. (You can hear their interview with Serena Ryder now, for instance.)

A Nice Little Blog FTW

17 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Like many of you, I get a lot of google alerts. Whenever I get a link to a blog instead of a credible news source, I try to check out the source and decipher first off, if it's just one of you guys pimping your favorite artist and second, if there's anything of substance in the content of the blog worth mention. For instance, if I see that Castrocopia is the source of the news alert, I don't come running back here to post a blog about it (although not because the content isn't spectacular.)

So today I got a blurb about a CD review on a blogspot called I wasn't familiar with this gem of a blog, but I am now. Founded by Tony Gisondi in 2000, this blog is designed to promote his favorite bands to the "fullest extent".

The mission of the site is simple: to help music fans of all types find out about the new and exciting music that is out there, that they may not have otherwise heard about. The site promotes both well known and underground, independent, and unsigned artists. By connecting the site's visitors to this wide array of artists, it allows them to make their own choices and assumptions based on the information set forth before them. You will never find a negative review on the site, nor will an artist be listed here if they hadn't sparked the interest of the site's creator.

I like this guy. A lot.

From what I can gather, he writes about 1 review per day, from arists stemming from John Butler Trio to Vampire Weekend. There are artists you probably know (Matt Hires, Sia, Brandi Carlile) and artists you may not be familiar with (The Disco Biscuits). So he's proven to me, he's a legitimate credible eclectic music freak.

It was with great pleasure that I read his review of Jason's EP.

His mellow voice is going to take the world by storm just as Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz have done.

Thanks Tony! You're welcome at Castrocopia!

Pop Sugar Rush - Greatest American Idol Performances

13 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Making a top 10 list of the most memorable performances of the past 8 seasons would be a daunting and impossible task, and one that is most likely inevitable. Pop Sugar Rush compiled their favorites, and while I could name a string of performances I might have included instead of some of their picks, I can't argue that these are all great performances. We can all agree with their number 4 pick though... Nice walk down Idol memory lane.

Thanks to Aimster for the link.

The Love Uncompromised: A Castrocopian Review

13 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Where does one begin? We all are music 'freaks' and take our passion very seriously. Of course I have been a Jason booster , or whatever ya want to call it, since day 1. I tend to be very protective and overbearing when it comes to my music choices, all castrocopians are . I am speechless(almost, lol), proud , estactic, vindicated, but the most appropriate feeling is "humbled". The journey from his church singing to this release is just the beginning, imagine his talent 'aged' and think of what is to come. As we have all said , Jason Castro is the real deal!! I promise this is the last time I will utter these words..."WE WERE SO FUCKING RIGHT AND THE AI FUCKWADS WERE SOOOOOOOO FUCKING WRONG"

Not for Nothing: Atlantic Records ranks as the #1 Record Label of '09

06 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Repeating its success from 2008, Atlantic reported it was ranked #1 in the music industry last year "with the biggest U.S. total album market share of 2009."

Jason Castro fan and Atlantic Chairman/CEO Craig Kallman said:
What is most significant is that we have achieved this with a smaller roster and fewer releases, as we have shifted our mission from being a traditional record company to an A&R-driven music content company where focused, deep, and long-term artist development is king. I'd like to thank our brilliant artists and passionate staff for coming together to realize the vision of the new Atlantic in 2009 and beyond.[...] We live for our artists, and it is our belief in them that fuels our passion and our determination.

Did someone say "Neener"?

Hurry up and get going 2010! You're taking too long.

Dakota Unearths Rare Never-Before-Seen Jason Castro Footage

EW's 28 Top Idol Tunes

05 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
Michael Slezak, veteran Idol junkie, has compiled a list of his Top 28 Idol Tunes from Idol Grads. Not sure why they stopped at 28 tunes, but no matter as Jason's single falls solidly in the first 10 pics, settling in at number 6.

The jaunty whistles and effervescent handclaps that kick off the laid-back troubador's debut single only begin to hint at the copious charms that lie ahead. Even the most cynical heart will melt as Jason imagines himself and a long-time sweetheart pretending to be strangers just for the sheer joy of reliving their early courtship.

Ah yes, Castrocopious charms. Thanks Michael!

And thanks to Dakota for the find.

Jason's Tour = Love

04 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
There's a nice write up about the upcoming tour with Matt Hires and Caitlin Crosby, entitled "Jason Castro and Co Spread the Love Nationwide" here. It includes some information about all three of the musicians touring together for the next couple of months, but focusses mainly on Jason. Nothing new for avid followers of Jason, but still, it's nice to see the news engine revving up.

Thanks to mothermayi for the link.

Congratulations to Mr. Jason Castro!

Congratulations Jason!

02 January, 2010 Posted by: Liz Lemon
What a great day for you! Today is not only palindrome day: 01022010. It's also the day that you were picked by THE Jim Cantiello, aka @jambajim as the "stand out" idol track of '09.

The jaunty jangle of Jason Castro's "Let's Just Fall In Love Again" is a sunny ode to keeping a long-term relationship fresh. The playful, honest lyrics coupled with an instantly hummable melody makes Jason's ditty one of the most charming, original and exciting debut singles of any "Idol" contestant.

Thanks a hell of a lot, Jim, for making that into a jpeg so I'd have to transcribe it. Non-sarcastic thanks for appreciating Jason without us having to send you care packages or jammies. I'm thinking you should be writing for some kind of music network. Boy, were *you* taken in by nomenclature....
