Castrocopian Know-It-Alls Know Paaaaaaaaantz!

Liz Lemon: McLovin, this has been a week in bizarro world. Here we managed to keep Jason in the competition but instead of laughing and cheering, the normally laid-back and hilarious community of Castrocopia has become a very angry mob with very harsh words directed at the perpetrators of calumnious villainy. And while that's all understandable, what it's robbing us of is the joy we should be feeling to have our boy make it well past where even we had dared hope to get him. Top 4! That's incredible and we should be celebrating Jason and all of the fans who put him there. I want to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to all the international fans who stayed up til 4 am their time to be able to register votes for Jason. Also thank you to those of you who took the time to install software despite any hurdles you had to overcome getting that done. And a huge thanks to all of you who invested your own money in order to text votes for Jason. All of that adds up. Did you know they had a surge in votes to the tune of 7 million last week? Dare I dream that we had something to do with that?

McLovin: Why not? We had people coming out of the woodwork to get voting information last week. There were probably a lot more that we don't know about, too. And you said it, Lemon -- THANK YOU to everyone who lost sleep/pulled their hair out/alienated spouses to get the vote out last week.

It is a little disheartening that, despite the admonitions of the great Bono of U2, we've let the bastards get us down this week when we should be happy, but we're coming around. We've got some great posters here who are accentuating the positive, and that's helping us all. The further we get away from Paulagate and the closer to Jason's homecoming, the better.

So, speaking of U2, they're on the big list of Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll. Not that I think they'd release the rights to any of their music to AI, but I am SO excited for this week. It's been a long time since I rock and rolled. I feel stupid and contagious. Here we are now, entertain us. Oh yeah. Alright. Take it easy, baby. Make it last all night.

Am I rambling? I wonder if I'm the only one that thinks it was a good decision to put Run-D.M.C.'s version of Walk This Way on the list instead of Aerosmith's? And what are you hoping Jason sings this week?

Liz Lemon: Not to show disrespect for list writers everywhere, but I found a number of selections rather odd. Elvis Costello's Pump It Up was on the list, but not Allison, Veronica or Shipbuilding. REM's Radio Free Europe I could understand as a "roots of indie rock" but Losing My Religion? That came out when REM was losing its indie cred and going global. I think the list would be more appropriately named something like "Davey's Party Mix Tape."

However, though it seems a bit random to me in general, there are some great songs on the list and there has been some fierce rooting in the forums for songs Jason should sing. Contrast this with ALW week when most posts started out "Oh for the love of God, Jason please stay far away from ....". I've been swayed by several posters to think a given song would be perfection - from When Doves Cry (um, how is that rock?) to Tangled Up In Blue (finally a song that fits the theme!). How can Jason go wrong this week?

Oh but you were asking what I hope to hear? Personally - I would love to hear him sing I Fall To Pieces but I think it would be a mistake for him to choose it based on the snooze factor. He really needs to rock out. For that reason, I've come to love your suggestion of American Girl. But we're something like 0 for 10 on getting our voices heard. Ain't that a shame? Dig if u will the picture...

McLovin: I can't speak to you now, Lemon, as I am shunning you for mocking When Doves Cry. Rock comes in all kinds of packages and When Doves Cry is wrapped in fun-KAY and starts with a scorching electric guitar (although the version on our poll by the Be Good Tanyas is gorgeous and folksy)

Once again this week, I've got my heart set on a certain song. I don't know why I do it to myself -- we don't ever get the list of what the contestants can REALLY choose from. Their list might well have consisted of only 20 of the 500 songs, but yes - this week I want Tom Petty's American Girl and I want it something fierce. It seems I'm not the only one, because it was the winner in our song choice poll this week.

You know, Lemon, no matter what he sings, what I really want -- as you do, too -- is for Jason to know that we really DO like to hear him sing. I want him to know that and to unleash. I want the big voice of Crazy Jason. Or Santeria Jason. *whispers* Or Badfish Jason. With the freedom this theme could offer, we just might get it.

Liz Lemon: What? You would shun me? I guess my definition of Rock and Roll is too narrow for this list which includes Yes, the Wailers and other bands that I would classify as reggae, prog rock or pop, so why not Prince and Madonna? I guess I'm just irked because given the songs on that list, you'd think they could have cleared off one of the half dozen Rolling Stones songs to make room for a Sublime song. What's that you say? Sublime didn't help shape Rock and Roll? I submit that if Jane's Addiction can be on the list, then why not Sublime? After all Sublime helped to shape Jason and Jason is the future of music. [/ridiculous fan rampage]

Anyway as you noted, Jason was probably given a list of 4 songs from the Y page and told to fight with Syesha for them. He'd still nail more than half of those. So I'm doing some deep breathing techniques and trying not to freak the hell out over song choice which is only the most important aspect of the competition. My fingers are crossed with yours that he'll channel some of those early pre-Idol performances where he lets loose and shows us that personality that he's been hiding behind a bushel (NO!). Tuesday's his night to shine. I want him to know "People love to hear him sing."

Whether he gets high praises or pre-performance panning though - all Jason fans have got to be prepared and educated about voting. I won't be satisfied until we get him to the final 3 and get him his homecoming package. The boy deserves nothing less.

McLovin: Whoa. I forgot to actually shun you. I just went right on a-talkin'. I can't quit you, Lemon. You complete me. And you're right -- that list is pretty iffy. You and I could have come up with a much better set of music, because we are Know-It-Alls. That could actually be a fun little project for the doldrums between the end of AI and the start of the tour.

I read somewhere that they were able to actually clear 300 of the 500 songs. Or I made that up in my head. Not sure. I'm just hoping he was given some real choices this week. Rumour has it that he's excited about whatever it is that he's going to be doing. He definitely looks like his illness is behind him, so I'm guessing he's going to come out swinging and we have to, too. Paaaanttzzz!

Liz Lemon: I can't quit you either, McLovin. And you had me at "Pants." I was starting to think I was the only one who found the list a bit dodgy. I thought, "Maybe I'm just 2 demanding. Maybe I'm just like my father 2 bold." Cause I think like that - in text message short-hand and also song lyrics. Whatever the rationale for listing BOTH Rick James' Superfreak AND M.C. Hammer's Can't Touch This, there ARE some fantastic songs on that list and if it's true they had 3/5 of them available then I have a good feeling. Jason said last week he does best on songs he already knows so this should be a home run. And I just KNOW we can pull him through. People get ready... This should be the best week yet to be a Jason Castro fan.

So I'll join you in the battle cry: Paaaaantz!!

McLovin: To battle! But, one last thing before we go. (It'll end up being more than one, but bear with me.) I hope everyone out there is listening to the people who know Jason, instead of the rumours.

The people who KNOW HIM are saying a.) He doesn't want to quit b.) He is in it to win it and c.) He's excited about his songs this week. Our dooming and glooming aside, this is probably THE biggest selection he's had to choose from all year. Whatever he picks (and the spoilers are out there if you want to see them) he picked them for a reason. Let him be the person with whose musicality and interpretation we all fell in love. And no matter what the judges say -- love it or hate it or I ain't mad atcha but that was just ai'ight for me -- he's here to win. We are here to help him. So give him some credit, have some faith and vote, vote, VOTE!

McLemon out.
